Preparing For Sarah’s Bridal Shower!
Yesterday was a very productive day. First & foremost I was able to sleep until 9:15. This is very welcomed considering I’m up at 5:45 Mon. - Fri. to head to work. When I woke up my babies were right there beside me. No I don’t have “babies as in human”, I have furry babies aka Newman & Ollie. They …

Open Question: 1990’s candy in wierd shapes and yellow wrapper/package?
I am trying to find a type of candy I grew up with. It came in boxes of six (similar to pop-tarts) and had a yellow wrapper. (Foil inside, paper outside). The candy was on a cardboard/wax white tray and it was in weird designs Like Flowers, and butterfly’s and such. There were colors of blue and red but probably more too, I’m not sure. They were fairly expensive as I recall (I didn’t get them often but it was a real treat the few times I did. Not like kids now-a-days!)
I think they are still sold in some places of the states but I have not seen them in the midwest nor over to the Colorado mountains. A friend went on a college tour around the states and HE got them in some state he was in and the whole group he was with got excited because they hadn’t seen them in a years! Let me know if you have any ideas!!

The class I protein AtTCP15 modulates plant development through a pathway that overlaps with the one affected by CIN-like TCP proteins.
J Exp Bot. 2011 Oct 20;
Uberti-Manassero NG, Lucero LE, Viola IL, Vegetti AC, Gonzalez DH
The function of the class I TCP transcription factor TCP15 from Arabidopsis thaliana has been studied through the analysis of plants that express a fusion of this protein to the EAR repressor domain. Constitutive expression of TCP15-EAR produces growth arrest at the seedling stage, before leaf emergence. Expression of the repressor fusion from the AtTCP15 promoter produces small plants with leaves whose margins progressively curve upwards, starting from the basal part of the lamina. Leaves contain smaller and less differentiated cells, both on the adaxial and abaxial sides. The abaxial domain is relatively enlarged, with disorganized cells separated by empty spaces. TCP15-EAR also affects the growth of leaf petioles, flower pedicels, and anther filaments. Flowers show reduced elongation of the three outer whorls and altered gynoecia with irregular carpel surfaces and enlarged repla. Ectopic stigma-like structures develop from medial and basal parts of the replum. TCP15-EAR produces an increase in expression of the boundary-specific genes LOB, CUC1, and CUC2. Changes in CUC1 and CUC2 expression can be explained by the existence of lower levels of miR164 in leaves and the repression of IAA3/SHY2 and the SAUR-like gene At1g29460 in leaves and flowers. TCP15 binds to the promoter regions of IAA3/SHY2 and At1g29460, suggesting that these genes may be direct targets of the transcription factor. The results indicate that TCP15 regulates the expression of boundary-specific genes through a pathway that affects auxin homeostasis and partially overlaps with the one modulated by class II CIN-like TCP proteins.

Purple Dinosaur asked: I live on a mountain on the east coast and my lot is nothing but sandstone. There are areas where there may be a little dirt mixed in with the sand but nothing significant. I figure grass is out of the question but I still want some greenery besides the weeds we are managing to grow. Anybody know what will grow well in these conditions? (flowers, shrubs, decorative trees)
Please don’t say cactus!!!
Wow, thank you to the first three people already. I’ll try every one of those suggestions!

giwalsh asked: I want to add a little color to my front yard. Just some simple plantings around three mature trees. They have already been mulched around. Across the street from me is an open farm field, so this area is prone to be quite windy. I live in the Chicagoland area. Any suggestions for some hearty flowers that can withstand the elements?

Assessing abundance and distribution of an invasive thrips Frankliniella schultzei (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in south Florida.
Bull Entomol Res. 2011 Oct 26; 1-11
Kakkar G, Seal DR, Kumar V
Within-plant and within-field distribution of larvae and adults of an invasive thrips species, Frankliniella schultzei (Trybom) on cucumber, Cucumis sativus L. was studied in 2008 and 2009 in Homestead, Florida. The majority of thrips were found inhabiting flowers of cucumber plants and little or none was found on the other parts of the plant. Thrips were aggregated in the field, as indicated by the two regression models, Taylor’s power and Iwao’s patchiness regression. Iwao’s patchiness regression provided a better fit than Taylor’s power law. The distribution was clumped during the initial stages of infestation at the edges of the field and became random thereafter. However, with increase in population density, thrips again formed aggregates in the field. Based on the average pest density per flower in a ∼0.25-ha field, minimum sample size (number of flowers) required at the recommended precision level (0.25) was 51. The number of samples required at two levels of predetermined pest density was also calculated, which would help growers in collecting optimum number of samples required to determine the correct threshold level of pest in fields. Results from seasonal abundance indicated that density of thrips peaked during the fifth week of sampling with an average of 25 and 34 adults per ten flowers during autumn 2008 and 2009, respectively. Results from these studies will help growers and extension personnel in understanding the abundance and distribution of F. schultzei in the field, which are important components required in developing a sound management program.

Open Question: Should I go with a black and grey or color tattoo?
I’m very torn about my tattoo design. I know I want it on my ankle.
I also have fair skin… I don’t tan at ALL.
I came up with a very nice, symbolic design involving a full colored design with a feather and some flowers. Even the colors have some deep symbolism. HOWEVER, the design involves some white/lighter elements and that combined with the different colors has me worried about the longevity of the design.
On the other hand, I think black and grey tattoos are gorgeous. I already love black and white photography and watching old movies (I’m also loving the idea of the dark black contrasting with my pale skin. I absolutely LOVE black and white contrast).
Since the symbolism is so strong, I’d probably get the same design in color or black and grey: peacock feathers, flowers, and all. The only thing I wouldn’t be able to keep if I went with black and grey would be the birthstone symbolism, but that’s fine.
So, what do you think would be best? Going with a “safer” black/grey design or taking a risk and going with color?
Here is a picture of me taken in daylight during the summer. I really am that pale.

Open Question: What are some cheap, simple dress up clothes I can make?
I’m kind of stealing the idea from a friend, who made dress up hats with silk flowers. They were so cute, and I would like to have a nice supply of dress up stuff for when my daughter is a little older. I already have some old hats, shoes and costume jewelry… but is there some other things I could make that wouldn’t cost too much? Just using stuff from Michaels or from stuff around the house. Thanks!

Standardised herbal extract of chlorogenic acid from leaves of Etlingera elatior (Zingiberaceae).
Pharmacognosy Res. 2011 Jul; 3(3): 178-84
Chan EW, Lim YY, Tan SP
Chlorogenic acid (CGA) or 5-caffeoylquinic acid, was found to be the dominant phenolic compound in leaves of Etlingera elatior (Zingiberaceae). The CGA content of E. elatior leaves was significantly higher than flowers of Lonicera japonica (honeysuckle), the commercial source. In this study, a protocol to produce a standardised herbal CGA extract from leaves of E. elatior using column chromatography was developed.Freeze-dried leaves of E. elatior were extracted with 30% ethanol, and sequentially fractionated using Diaion HP-20 and Sephadex LH-20.The CGA fractions, which yielded extracts of 10% and 40% w/w purity, possessed antioxidant, tyrosinase inhibition, and antibacterial properties. The entire fractionation process took only 6.5 hours, using gravity flow. From 50 g of leaves, the final yield of CGA extract was 0.2 g (0.4%). The CGA content of the standardised herbal extract from leaves of E. elatior (40%) is 1.6 times that of commercial extracts from honeysuckle flowers (25%).With high CGA content, the standardised herbal extract has a great potential to be developed into functional food and other health products. Leaves of E. elatior, which currently have no economic value, could serve as an alternative source of CGA. Leaves are large, available in abundance, and harvesting is non-destructive to the plants.

oakenfoldgoddess asked: Hi I am needing a little help with the decor of this venue. It is a very industrial space (it used to be an old boiler room, now converted to a restaurant) with exposed brick, high ceilings, etc. We would be getting married in May 2011. What colors do you think would work best with this venue? And what color flowers/kind of flowers do you like with this space? Would you use candles? Also, would you do uplighting or any other kind of lighting to make it more wedding-ish, or leave it the way it is?
