Best way to preserve flowers during a drive?

By admin | January 27, 2012

Suzumiya Haruhi asked:

I’m going on a four hour trip with a friend of mine tomorrow and we’re driving back to her house–thing is, I have a bouquet of flowers saved for her birthday and want to give them to her when she picks me up. Would they be okay sitting in the backseat in the heat, or what kind of measures should I take to keep them from getting ruined during the drive?

How long will a bouquet of flowers last still in the wrapping?

By admin | January 27, 2012

asked:

I bought a bouquet of flowers from a local florist. He attached a little water packet to a couple of the larger flowers, and they’re wrapped in flower wrapping. I plan to deliver them to a friend, but they won’t be home for a few hours. How long will the flowers last in the wrapping?

What flowers grow quickly and inexpensively?

By admin | January 26, 2012

I want to grow some nice flowers along a path in the shade. I’m not a great gardener and I’m on a tight budget. What are some flowers that grow fast in limited light and are easy to maintain?

Internalization of Fresh Produce by Foodborne Pathogens.

Annu Rev Food Sci Technol. 2011 Mar 2;
Erickson MC

Recent studies addressing the internalization of fresh produce by foodborne pathogens arose in response to the growing number of recent and high profile outbreaks involving fresh produce. Because chemical sanitizing agents used during harvest and minimal processing are unlikely to reach enteric pathogens residing within plant tissue, it is imperative that paths for pathogen entry be recognized and minimized. Using both microscopy and microbial enumeration tools, enteric pathogens have been shown to enter plant tissues through both natural apertures (stomata, lateral junctions of roots, flowers) and damaged (wounds, cut surfaces) tissue. In studies revealing preharvest internalization via plant roots or leaf stomata, experimental conditions have primarily involved exposure of plants to high pathogen concentrations (≥6 log g(-1) soil or 6 log ml(-1) water), but those pathogens internalized appear to have short-term persistence. Postharvest internalization of pathogens via cut surfaces may be minimized by maintaining effective levels of sanitizing agents in waters during harvesting and minimal processing. Expected final online publication date for the Annual Review of Food Science and Technology Volume 3 is February 28, 2012. Please see http://www.annualreviews.org/catalog/pubdates.aspx for revised estimates.

Open Question: Centerpieces for Fairytale Themed Wedding?

My brother and sister-in-law are having a second wedding for their 10 year anniversary. They want to have a fairytale/castle themed wedding. It will be during the month of April. They put me in charge of the table centerpieces.
I would like centerpieces that are tall and elegant. They both mentioned that they don’t want flowers. I love candelabras, but can’t use candles.
I also thought of using ostrich feathers in a tall vase with LED lights. However, is it okay to use ostrich feathers for a fairytale themed wedding?
Please leave suggestions and your opinions. Thanks.

By admin | January 17, 2012

asked:

I have a Beta, and he works well in his bowl, but I have seen pictures with Beta in bowl with flowers in them, and it looks so beautiful! But I know Absolutely nothing about where to start, what type of flower, where to buy them, all that. So I’d love some guidance! Thank you :) I am talking about an open bowl, not a vase.

Wedding flowers are beautiful, symbolic
Of all of our activities, wedding ceremonies may be the most symbolic. Symbolism is found in everything from the rings, representing the couple’s commitment of everlasting love, to who sits on which side of the church. Even the flowers used in ceremonies can be symbolic.

What are some good flowers that have shallow roots systems?

By admin | January 13, 2012

Catriona asked:

I have small backyard I share with my nature-loving daughter. There are old rusty pipes that are too heavy and too deep to remove, so I covered it with a large pile of brush and cane. It is along a fence in a grove of young trees so underneath the pile is a mass of tree roots. I’m planning to put a mound of soil over it about 5 or 6″ deep to hide it. My daughter suggested it would be a nice place for a fairy garden but I wonder, if I plant perennials or flowers that will attract butterflies, will they thrive in such conditions? What plants could I use?
It’s a fairly sunny area and I live in zone 5 in New Brunswick, Canada. So, a very short summer and very cold long winters.

What is the best site that you have found for getting artificial flowers?

By admin | December 11, 2011

Shannon P asked:

I’m hoping I don’t have to go the artificial route, but if I do, I really want my flowers to look real. I’m so scared of buying artificial flowers online because, not having seen them in person, they may look fake and cheap. What are some sites that you have found and gotten flowers from that make good quality flowers?

my bouquet will have anemones, daisies, stock, spray roses, wax flowers, asters and lilies.
